Montgomery Collection Holiday Pop Up

On Saturday, December 9th we will be hosting  The Montgomery Collection at our flagship store just in time for the holiday gifting season!

The Montgomery Collection features handcrafted leather travel goods that revels in connections, crossed paths and engagement in spaces. Each series is based on an abstract reminder of an experience in a location, taking on the area code as the products name. These moments are the motivation behind each piece, creating new pieces for others to own and create their stories with on daily encounters and far away travel.

We sat down with The Montgomery Collection Founder and Designer Marissa Montgomery to learn more about this amazing and inspiring local brand!

How did MONTGOMERY COLLECTION  start?

The early stages of Montgomery Collection started right after college when I began traveling more frequently. I rarely check luggage & was searching for the right weekender that I could carry on all my flights. Generally, if I can’t find a wardrobe piece I’m looking for, my default has always been to just make it. After many uninspiring prototypes of cotton fabric bags, I knew I needed to figure out how to work with leather in order to create something I actually liked. From the weekender, the line developed into the five different products offered today, all designed in conjunction with one another for streamlined travel. The design of each series within the collection is based on an abstract reminder of an experience in a location, taking on the area code as the products name. These moments are the motivation behind each piece, creating new pieces for others to design their stories with on daily encounters and far away travel. 

For those who are not familiar with MONTGOMERY COLLECTION can you describe your aesthetic?

 The brand is a balance of minimal forms, functional use and timeless style. I care about the curation of an outfit, the brand provides pieces that seamlessly coordinate with different wardrobe styles. The core pieces have a more timeless design, while some of the limited edition series provide pieces with a little more variation. 

Where did you learn to design and produce your incredible leather pieces?

 I learned leather work from a variety of sources. The outcome has been a blend of reading books, watching videos, trial and error and implementing feedback from experts on the process. I currently produce each piece by hand. There is something rewarding about the physical production, deciding the association of materials and transforming them into something that didn’t exist prior. There is an energy I am attached to that comes from the process of developing ideas into functional products that are put out into the world for others to interact with. This mindset has been the reason for continuing with the handcrafted production method.  

 What’s your favorite piece and why? 

I have two favorite pieces, one being the No. 612.1 weekender as it was the start of the brand. I finished making mine the night before I left on a trip to Sweden and it has been with me on every trip since. I associate a lot of memories from traveling with this bag, so the nostalgia surrounding it makes it one of my favorites. My other favorite is the No.030.4 flat from the 030 series, based on moments in Berlin. This series provided the first Flats for the brand and I like how universal they are. They can serve as organizational pieces inside the totes and weekenders in the collection or function as stand alone pieces, so I enjoy the versatility. I didn’t know I would be going to Germany, I was surprised at the airport with the trip, so this piece will always remind me of the spontaneous moments in life that I am very drawn to. This piece was motivated by some of the design elements in the lobby of the hotel we stayed in and I’m instantly taken back there when I use this piece.

What inspires you?

I like getting lost in the details of what makes up the current moment somewhere, the culture essentially. I am most inspired by the combination of people, music, ideas and places that challenge the norm. I truly believe the opportunities to fully experience the value of different moments happens during both day to day motion and far away travel, which is why the brand caters to both. I usually find myself in an art museum when I am needing to escape the monotony, as there is so much to be experienced of different places and cultures within the walls of any gallery.

Creating an Inspiring + Productive Workspace with Lauren Makielski and R+H

Our Fall 2017 Collection is now in stock at our flagship store and we will be celebrating the launch with a workshop led by Artist and Organization Enthusiast Lauren Makielski at our flagship store on Saturday, December 2nd. Lauren will be using her design thinking and project development skills while also digging into her passion for well-designed productive spaces, to explain and demonstrate the various ways in which RUSSELL+HAZEL products can be utilized to create a productive and inspiring workspace.

Your surroundings are proven to have a big impact on  mood, emotions, and productivity. Which makes sense that if your workspace feels uninspiring and disorderly, you may also feel uninspired and less productive, thus investing time and effort into organizing and decorating your workspace to create an environment that is inspiring and drives productivity could work wonders for your professional life.

russell+hazel Goes Anywhere

Anywhere Apparel, the innovative local brand making versatile, stylish and functional clothing and accessories to go anywhere – from deep cultural adventure to the remote outdoors – will be collaborating with our flagship store to infuse your holiday travels with  style, function and luxury.

During this pop up event on Sunday, November 26th, Anywhere Apparel will have their  limited edition, small-batch, and ethically made products for purchase.  To compliment Anywhere Apparel’s stylish travel essentials, our flagship store will be offering a curated selection of luxurious travel accessories.

We sat down with Kelly Koster , co-founder of Anywhere Apparel to get the insight on this visionary brand.

How did ANYWHERE APPAREL  start?

On a napkin during a flight to Japan back in 2013. Cliche, I know! Just a scrappy sketch next to a pack of peanuts and those delicious cookies from Delta. My husband and I had this big idea that travel could be better and more rewarding if we didn’t have to pack so much stuff. So we started building the foundation for the perfect travel wardrobe.

For those who are not familiar with ANYWHERE APPAREL can you describe your brand and aesthetic?

Our brand is smart, versatile, and timeless. These are the things you need when you’re on-the-go.  We like to keep the outward appearance clean and classic so you can dress it up or down.  Then, we add in hidden functionality to make everything really useful.  We love pockets and unexpected features.  For example, our men’s Stowaway Jacket converts into a wearable satchel!

After traveling to 45+ countries, we learned that bringing less is liberating. When we take trips, we want to hike and experience beautiful views, but we also want to immerse ourselves in local culture as much as possible. So, we typically only pack one carry-on bag. That means your clothing needs to do a lot with less.

Where and when did you design and production aspect of your brand?

We do all of the design work and sourcing of materials ourselves.  We look for the smartest fabrics and trims from Italy to Switzerland and Japan.  Everything is about quality and versatility.  Can this withstand everyday use?  Could you take it for a countryside hike and then dinner in the city?  We think about destinations and how people will actually use our items. Our designer, Alisa Miller, is part engineer, part artist. She really knows how to bring the two together.

Our journals are made by hand with vintage binding tools in Minneapolis.  The bindery has been around for over sixty years, run by the same family of archival quality book binders.  Our clothing is made by in NYC by a small production studio specializing in designer level work.  New York is a very special place to be right now with the return to quality and small batch manufacturing.  Quality is extremely important to us, from production down to our custom snaps.

What’s your favorite piece and why?

I love our Antipodes Reversible Coat. It has been in development for over two years and it’s finally launching!  When we started Anywhere, I dreamed of having the perfect travel coat.  Japan served as good inspiration because there’s so much style and culture but there’s so much nature and outdoor experiences you can’t miss.  You want to feel fashionable in Tokyo, but you also want to feel protected and comfortable hiking up shrines, especially in the mountain towns.  This coat had to do it all, and I’m so proud to say it does! It’s rugged and chic with 12 pockets. My husband and I are going to Japan with our almost 2-year-old daughter in January and I cannot wait to bring it with.

Can you tell us a random fact about yourself?

All of my recent trips have been to remote islands, but not the tropical ones!  The Faroe Islands are rainy, a bit chilly, and unpredictable. Plus, there is very limited WiFi, so I got to relive the magic of my analogue childhood again. I loved it.

Everything at russell+hazel combines function and style which fits our philosophy at Anywhere perfectly.  Truly good design marries the two so you can’t separate beauty from its intended purpose and russell+hazel does that so well. Plus, when I walked into the flagship store for the first time, I felt transported to a new inspiring place.  That’s exactly why I love travel.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the memories of all of my trips and the anticipation of trips to come.  You don’t recall days in your life.  You remember significant moments, and for me, many of those happened in far away places like the Amazon jungle, Russia, and Okinawa.  You get to leave your life behind temporarily and focus on what really matters.  When you leave your routine, if only for just a bit, you begin to experience life through the eyes of a child again. Kids aren’t predisposed to a certain way of thinking yet, so everything is new.  Travel can create that formative state which really open you up to new possibilities.

Flagship Store One Year Anniversary

We cannot believe that it’s already been one year since we moved to our new home in the ever dynamic North Loop neighborhood and we could not have chosen a better location for our flagship store.  Over this past year we have been surrounded by a community of like-minded and very supportive retailers such as D.NOLO, MartinPatrick3, Pacifier and C’est Chic to name a few.  Our loyal customers and fans have journeyed with us to our new location and have been extremely receptive of all of the new exciting additions to our flagship store.  From our customization and beauty bars to the one chair hair studio manned by celebrity hairstylist Pearson Knight and the talented makeup artist/hairstylist Stephanie Domrose, to the thoughtfully curated supplemental products that complement the r+h brand lifestyle.  All have been received with excitement, delight and appreciation and we look forward to another year of delighting you and adding life to your work!

Nina Berenato Trunk Show

On Saturday, August 19th and Sunday, August 20th from noon to 4 p.m. meet the Austin, TX based jewelry designer empowering women everywhere! Join us and designer Nina Berenato, innovator and master of beautiful, empowering  pieces, in celebrating the launch of her new collection with a meet and greet and trunk show at our flagship store. Guests will be able to get an exclusive first look as well as shop the new collection called Chaos.

          

          

Late classical authors redefined Chaos as the chaotic mix of elements which existed in the primordial universe, conflicting it with the primal “Mud”, from which the first snakes slithered the earth. Chaos was an unformed mass, where all the elements were jumbled up together in a “shapeless heap”. From this, everything was created. This highly labor intensive collection will include everything from ear cuffs, full finger rings, birthstones, and rose gold as a color option in all styles.

                      

Nina Berenato’s amazing pieces have been available at our flagship store since it opened back in October 2016 and has been a constant favorite of both our staff and customers, thanks to her ability to make women feel powerful, beautiful and capable of anything through her designs. Her pieces can also be found gracing the pages of Vogue, W, Cosmopolitan, MTV and outfitting fashion forward celebrities like Alicia Keys, Lena Dunham, FKA Twigs and Lady Gaga.

In an effort to celebrate the russell in russell+hazel, our flagship store in collaboration with Pearson Knight will be hosting Men’s Night.  Taking place on Thursday, July 27th from 5 – 8 PM, this event will feature pop-ups, special discounts as well as musical performances.

For those who appreciate quality craftsmanship coupled with beautiful design and products that are locally made with a story behind them, pop-ups such as Greenwich Vintage and Urbain jewelry will not disappoint.  Guests will be able to  have their footwear resoled and restored with Greenwich Vintage’s signature colored soles as well as pre-order from Greenwich Vintage’s first release from its Capsule Collection “The Net Soldier“.

Guests will also be able to pre-order from Urbain’s latest collection The Giant Killer, which was made using stones from the Valley of Elah.

For guests who appreciate exceptionally well-made and well-fitting clothing, a knowledgeable guide from the BONOBOS Guideshop will be on hand to offer  complimentary style advice as well as guide guests through the process of finding their perfect fit.

r+h Flagship Store Combines Organization + Art with Abbey Holden

Abbey Holden is a Minneapolis based artist who’s vibrant work caught our eye back in November when we partnered with her for our MN Made Pop-Up event.  Since then we have been impatiently waiting for the opportunity to collaborate with her again and are excited that the time has finally come.  On Saturday, June 24th our flagship store will merge the world of organization and art by hosting Abbey Holden for a unique customization event.  Abbey will be hand painting on our customizable binders that are available at our in-store customization bar.  This is a rare opportunity to not only see Abbey in her element but also leave with a one-of-a-kind binder designed by you that also features the work of this amazing local artist.  We sat down with Abbey to find out a bit more about this incredibly talented woman.

Describe your process. Where do you look for inspiration? What is your favorite part? Least favorite?

My process, like many creatives, is ever-evolving and changes weekly.  My career has certain elements of work, personality, inspiration and practicality. Currently, I’m learning to find that sweet spot of balance where I can flourish as a working artist.

Being inspired is one of the best things life has to offer.  I find inspiration at the most unexpected times and places, but it usually comes from being surrounded by other creatives, spending time outdoors and challenging myself with my work.

My favorite times, of course, are spent painting in the mornings when the world is quiet and the daylight grows through my studio windows. That being said, my least favorite times are when I haven’t made the time to physically create.

What are your passions outside of art and design and how do they influence your work?

I’ve always been drawn to the outdoors and natural landscape.  To me, nature is the highest communicator of peace and beauty. The grace that comes through living in this beautiful world inspires me to create.  I aim to reflect that awe-inspired feeling and overwhelming sense of peace through my artwork.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received when it comes to your craft, and who was it from?

Just start. Create. Create. Create. Push through fear. Shake off rejection.  Sell your work.  Be wary of perfection.  Get your work out there.  Be patient while learning to run a small business.”

This is just a snippet of incredibly thoughtful and poignant advice from artist Kristi Kohut of Hapi Art.  Kristi encouraged me to start my business through her guiding advice and support!

What other artists/creators work do you admire? Why?

Hands down Emily Jeffords.  Emily has put special emphasis on the process of creating rather than focusing solely on the final product.  Through this lens, she has organized a number of resources for emerging artists and works to encourage those in creative fields.

What do you find inspiring about russell+hazel?

I have been a long-time fan of russell+hazel!  The blend of beauty, great design and functionality is consistently evident in the product. As a small business owner working in a visually-focused field, I tend to want beautiful things all around me.  russell+hazel has elevated the office/desk environment through clean and beautiful products that make me want to work!

 

How do you “add life to your work”

As a working-artist, my passion in life is also my work.  The intertwining of these two things allows my work to be a reflection of everything I love! That’s a pretty special thing.  As my creative eye, influences and passions evolve, so does my work.  I feel very blessed to have this blend of life and work!

You have lived in a few other cities/states, tell us why you love living in Minneapolis?

I can’t say enough good things about Minneapolis! My life has taken me to Denver, New York, Philadelphia and now back to my hometown of Minneapolis.  I can honestly say I didn’t appreciate this city until moving back here.  Now, I’m impressed every single day by this city and how it supports the people living in it.  Minneapolis is a beautiful, clean, active, friendly and immensely creative city.  I am inspired on a daily-basis by the creativity and support for the arts here!

 

What’s one question that you’ve never been asked that you wish you had?

What did you want to be/do when you grew up?” I still have a piece of homework from second grade with that question.  My answer then was “artist.”  I think I’m making my seven year old self proud today!

The r+h Flagship Store Welcomes Hairstylist and Makeup-Artist Stephanie Domrose

If you’ve visited our flagship store, you may be aware of the “by appointment only” style studio discreetly tucked away in the back of the store, usually manned by celebrity hairstylist Pearson Knight whenever he is town taking care of his Minnesota clientele.  We are excited to announce a new addition to the style studio!  Hairstylist and Makeup Artist Stephanie Domrose will also be taking clients by appointment only at The Style Studio at russell+hazel.

Stephanie is a hair/make-up artist and life coach, specializing in highlighting the inner and outer beauty she sees in her guests and helping them to truly shine. She offers transformational coaching programs and hair and make-up services both on-site (yes, she can come to you!), and in the salon.  Stephanie has been playing with hair and make-up for over ten years.  She started her career with Juut in Wayzata and wore many hats there: hair and make-up educator, member of the creative team, community involvement representative, new artist mentor, hair and make-up lead for runway shows, photo shoots, and ad campaigns. Stephanie also loves freelance work in bridal, editorial, and runway beauty- her work has been featured in MN Bride, Minneapolis/Saint Paul Magazine, Lake Minnetonka Magazine, various how-to video series’,  and she’s done make-up at NYFW. Through her own personal journey, she’s realized that polishing beauty on the outside is only half the picture, and has devoted her time to researching and developing programs to help others cultivate their inner beauty.  She believes our inner world requires just as much attention as our outer world, and the marriage of her life coaching work and her hair/make-up artistry is a true reflection of that belief!

We sat down with Stephanie to learn more about her beauty industry journey and managed to  come away with a few of her amazing beauty secrets in the process!

When did you know a career in beauty was for you?

When I was a senior in high school and I realized I had two choices: to do the thing I thought I SHOULD do (go to college, like I had always planned), or to do the thing that excited me the most: go to the Aveda Institute.  I decided to follow my passion, and I’m reminded periodically when I’m ‘working’ and it doesn’t feel like work that I’ve made an excellent decision. 

How long have you been in the beauty industry?

Going on 11 years.

You specialize in both hair and makeup, do you find that you enjoy doing one more than the other?

 That’s interesting, at different times in my career I’ve ‘given up’ doing one or the other to specialize in just one thing, and I always felt pulled back to doing both. I get to create the full picture when I can do both hair and make-up so I have to say I love them equally.

In addition to your daily clientele you also do editorial/runway work, can you tell us a bit more about that?

 Sure!  Editorial/runway work is like going to a hair and make-up playground.  There are lots of hair and make-up looks that aren’t suitable for everyday wear, and doing editorial and runway work is an awesome outlet for that creativity.  I’ve done hair and make-up for runway shows at the Weismann Art Museum, Aveda Congress, Make-up for MN4MN (MN fashion week), and NYFW, and editorial work for many different magazines.  It’s a fun way to collaborate with other artists, photographers, and designers to bring some great ideas and inspirations to life!

What’s your favorite beauty product and why?

Tinted Moisturizer.  My favorites are Aveda and Laura Mercier.  It’s a simple product you can apply with your hands, and it gives you a glow that looks natural and radiant without completely covering up your skin.  SPF is a bonus too.

What is the easiest/quickest way to turn a day/work look into something that works for night out?

The easiest transition look only requires lipstick, two hair ties, and a couple bobby pins.

Gather your hair at your nape and secure it in a low pony. Braid your hair in a simple three strand braid (if you don’t know how to braid, split it into two strands and twist around each other).  Secure the braid with second pony.  Mash and pull the braid apart a bit to loosen and soften.  Wind braid up in a bun at the nape and secure with cris-crossed bobby pins.

Apply your favorite lip color and viola!  Ready to rock a night out.

 

 What are your favorite Spring/Summer 2017 beauty trends?

I love the swipe of bold and bright eyeshadow on the eyelids for something fun and different.

Also, the natural trends are HOT.  Natural hair texture, glow-y skin, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Can you tell us a random fact about yourself?

I love ‘playing’ dress-up.  My partner Connor and I like to throw themed parties (some of the latest were a medieval-themed Christmas, and an Arabian Nights birthday party)- basically just a reason to dress up in a costume and create an interesting atmosphere to entertain in!  We also go to Convergence, it’s like the local version of Comic-Con, and make costumes each year.  #shamelessgeeks

Why partner with the style studio at the russell+hazel flagship store?

Several reasons: I love the focus on customization at Russell+Hazel, it pairs well with my business’ focus.  I love the space, the store and style studio are beautiful.  I’ve known Pearson for a long time and am inspired by his work in the beauty industry and his new product line.  Gail is awesome and she’s curated an awesome store inventory.  The location is super convenient, free parking in the North Loop? Unheard of!

Oh, and two words: glitter ceiling.  Need I say more?

What inspires you?

Glitter. I know, it’s like I’m 4, but seriously, it brings me SO much joy.

 Honestly, people. I am intrigued by learning about people and how they live, love, and interact.  That’s why I do the work I do, I think the greatest gift you can give someone is to see their beauty and reflect it back to them, like a mirror.  If I can do that, I’ll most definitely get out of bed in the morning.

Slow Flowers: An Interview with Foxglove’s Christine Hoffman

As the Twin Cities first exclusively local and chemical-free florist, Foxglove is more than just a flower studio. Owner and founder Christine Hoffman is a slow flowers advocate striving to form a strong community of sustainable flower farmers, small business owners, and folks who care about supporting these mindful endeavors. By providing a local, sustainable option to traditional flowers, putting a premium on collaboration, and reaching out to the community, she hopes to foster change.

Christine is committed to sourcing and using all locally-grown, chemical-free flowers & flora in her St. Paul studio. She is also dedicated to teaching about the importance and beauty of working with seasonal materials, and is at the forefront of the slow flowers movement in the Midwest. We are proud and very honored to partner with Christine and be a Foxglove flowers & flora subscription pick-up location.  We talked to Christine to educate ourselves on the slow flower movement and learn more about this incredibly inspiring woman.

r+h: Have you always been in love with flowers? 

Christine Hoffman: Yup. I grew up roaming around the woods and gathering treasures, including big handfuls of wildflowers, and I’ve always been a gardener. I also discovered, after starting Foxglove, that my great-grandparents were flower farmers! So, it’s obviously in my genes and surprising to me now that it didn’t develop into a career earlier.

r+h: What made you start Foxglove Market & Studio? 

CH: A fateful phone call from a friend and colleague, suggesting I open a store next door to her. I immediately told her she was crazy, and then immediately started planning the layout and inventory in my head. Local flowers were part of that original vision, and eventually won out as the focus of my business. Now it’s all flowers all the time!

r+h: Can you explain the Slow Flower Movement ?

CH: Over 80% of the flowers we buy in the U.S. are grown overseas, and it has been difficult for American flower farms to compete with the low cost of these imported blooms. The Slow Flower movement, like the Slow Food movement, aims to support farmers growing here in the U.S, and encourage consumers to embrace what is seasonal and local. My friend and mentor, Debra Prinzing, summed it up perfectly in her recent “Slow Flower Manifesto”.

r+h: Can you tell us about your community of local growers/farmers ?

CH: Foxglove began with two farmers, both of whom had been growing flowers for a number of years. Eventually, I talked a few new farmers into coming on board, but for the last 4 years, we were still only at about 6 flower farmers in the Twin Cities area. In the past year or so, the local scene has gone bonkers. My new venture this summer-an all-local wholesale flower market-has 19 participating farmers!

r+h: What is your design process?

CH: While my personality is very organized and detail-oriented, my design process has always been very organic, hands-on, and intuitive. I don’t like to do a lot of planning, which may drive a few of my farmers crazy. I’m notoriously bad about ordering ahead of time, and much prefer to see what’s fresh and lovely that day, using that as immediate inspiration.

r+h: Do you have a favorite flower?

CH: Well, one might think it’s the Foxglove…..but, it really depends on the season. Or the year. Or my mood.

r+h: Why chose to partner with the russell+hazel flagship store?

CH: I have been a fan of Russell hazel for many, many years, and the flagship store makes me swoon. The core products from r + h appeal to the organizational nut in me, but the concept and product selection at the flagship store is so modern and right-on.  Plus, the staff is so darn nice:)

r+h: How do you hope to impact change with Foxglove Market & Studio?

CH: First and foremost, by providing a sustainable, local alternative to conventional cut flowers. Additionally, building a strong and diverse creative community-through business collaborations, consumer outreach, and farmer support-is essential to creating change. I certainly can’t do this alone, and when people are armed with information and options, it is amazing what can happen.
