The r+h Flagship Store Welcomes Hairstylist and Makeup-Artist Stephanie Domrose

June 6, 2017

If you’ve visited our flagship store, you may be aware of the “by appointment only” style studio discreetly tucked away in the back of the store, usually manned by celebrity hairstylist Pearson Knight whenever he is town taking care of his Minnesota clientele.  We are excited to announce a new addition to the style studio!  Hairstylist and Makeup Artist Stephanie Domrose will also be taking clients by appointment only at The Style Studio at russell+hazel.

Stephanie is a hair/make-up artist and life coach, specializing in highlighting the inner and outer beauty she sees in her guests and helping them to truly shine. She offers transformational coaching programs and hair and make-up services both on-site (yes, she can come to you!), and in the salon.  Stephanie has been playing with hair and make-up for over ten years.  She started her career with Juut in Wayzata and wore many hats there: hair and make-up educator, member of the creative team, community involvement representative, new artist mentor, hair and make-up lead for runway shows, photo shoots, and ad campaigns. Stephanie also loves freelance work in bridal, editorial, and runway beauty- her work has been featured in MN Bride, Minneapolis/Saint Paul Magazine, Lake Minnetonka Magazine, various how-to video series’,  and she’s done make-up at NYFW. Through her own personal journey, she’s realized that polishing beauty on the outside is only half the picture, and has devoted her time to researching and developing programs to help others cultivate their inner beauty.  She believes our inner world requires just as much attention as our outer world, and the marriage of her life coaching work and her hair/make-up artistry is a true reflection of that belief!

We sat down with Stephanie to learn more about her beauty industry journey and managed to  come away with a few of her amazing beauty secrets in the process!

When did you know a career in beauty was for you?

When I was a senior in high school and I realized I had two choices: to do the thing I thought I SHOULD do (go to college, like I had always planned), or to do the thing that excited me the most: go to the Aveda Institute.  I decided to follow my passion, and I’m reminded periodically when I’m ‘working’ and it doesn’t feel like work that I’ve made an excellent decision.

How long have you been in the beauty industry?

Going on 11 years.

You specialize in both hair and makeup, do you find that you enjoy doing one more than the other?

That’s interesting, at different times in my career I’ve ‘given up’ doing one or the other to specialize in just one thing, and I always felt pulled back to doing both. I get to create the full picture when I can do both hair and make-up so I have to say I love them equally.

In addition to your daily clientele you also do editorial/runway work, can you tell us a bit more about that?

Sure!  Editorial/runway work is like going to a hair and make-up playground.  There are lots of hair and make-up looks that aren’t suitable for everyday wear, and doing editorial and runway work is an awesome outlet for that creativity.  I’ve done hair and make-up for runway shows at the Weismann Art Museum, Aveda Congress, Make-up for MN4MN (MN fashion week), and NYFW, and editorial work for many different magazines.  It’s a fun way to collaborate with other artists, photographers, and designers to bring some great ideas and inspirations to life!

What’s your favorite beauty product and why?

Tinted Moisturizer.  My favorites are Aveda and Laura Mercier.  It’s a simple product you can apply with your hands, and it gives you a glow that looks natural and radiant without completely covering up your skin.  SPF is a bonus too.

What is the easiest/quickest way to turn a day/work look into something that works for night out?

The easiest transition look only requires lipstick, two hair ties, and a couple bobby pins.

Gather your hair at your nape and secure it in a low pony. Braid your hair in a simple three strand braid (if you don’t know how to braid, split it into two strands and twist around each other).  Secure the braid with second pony.  Mash and pull the braid apart a bit to loosen and soften.  Wind braid up in a bun at the nape and secure with cris-crossed bobby pins.

Apply your favorite lip color and viola!  Ready to rock a night out.

What are your favorite Spring/Summer 2017 beauty trends?

I love the swipe of bold and bright eyeshadow on the eyelids for something fun and different.

Also, the natural trends are HOT.  Natural hair texture, glow-y skin, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Can you tell us a random fact about yourself?

I love ‘playing’ dress-up.  My partner Connor and I like to throw themed parties (some of the latest were a medieval-themed Christmas, and an Arabian Nights birthday party)- basically just a reason to dress up in a costume and create an interesting atmosphere to entertain in!  We also go to Convergence, it’s like the local version of Comic-Con, and make costumes each year.  #shamelessgeeks

Why partner with the style studio at the russell+hazel flagship store?

Several reasons: I love the focus on customization at Russell+Hazel, it pairs well with my business’ focus.  I love the space, the store and style studio are beautiful.  I’ve known Pearson for a long time and am inspired by his work in the beauty industry and his new product line.  Gail is awesome and she’s curated an awesome store inventory.  The location is super convenient, free parking in the North Loop? Unheard of!

Oh, and two words: glitter ceiling.  Need I say more?

What inspires you?

Glitter. I know, it’s like I’m 4, but seriously, it brings me SO much joy.

Honestly, people. I am intrigued by learning about people and how they live, love, and interact.  That’s why I do the work I do, I think the greatest gift you can give someone is to see their beauty and reflect it back to them, like a mirror.  If I can do that, I’ll most definitely get out of bed in the morning.

Stephanie will be available by appointment only at The Style Studio at our flagship store starting in May.  Appointments can be booked by clicking here.

Slow Flowers: An Interview with Foxglove’s Christine Hoffman

May 25, 2017

As the Twin Cities first exclusively local and chemical-free florist, Foxglove is more than just a flower studio. Owner and founder Christine Hoffman is a slow flowers advocate striving to form a strong community of sustainable flower farmers, small business owners, and folks who care about supporting these mindful endeavors. By providing a local, sustainable option to traditional flowers, putting a premium on collaboration, and reaching out to the community, she hopes to foster change.

Christine is committed to sourcing and using all locally-grown, chemical-free flowers & flora in her St. Paul studio. She is also dedicated to teaching about the importance and beauty of working with seasonal materials, and is at the forefront of the slow flowers movement in the Midwest. We are proud and very honored to partner with Christine and be a Foxglove flowers & flora subscription pick-up location.  We talked to Christine to educate ourselves on the slow flower movement and learn more about this incredibly inspiring woman.

r+h: Have you always been in love with flowers?

Christine Hoffman: Yup. I grew up roaming around the woods and gathering treasures, including big handfuls of wildflowers, and I’ve always been a gardener. I also discovered, after starting Foxglove, that my great-grandparents were flower farmers! So, it’s obviously in my genes and surprising to me now that it didn’t develop into a career earlier.

r+h: What made you start Foxglove Market & Studio?

CH: A fateful phone call from a friend and colleague, suggesting I open a store next door to her. I immediately told her she was crazy, and then immediately started planning the layout and inventory in my head. Local flowers were part of that original vision, and eventually won out as the focus of my business. Now it’s all flowers all the time!

r+h: Can you explain the Slow Flower Movement ?

CH: Over 80% of the flowers we buy in the U.S. are grown overseas, and it has been difficult for American flower farms to compete with the low cost of these imported blooms. The Slow Flower movement, like the Slow Food movement, aims to support farmers growing here in the U.S, and encourage consumers to embrace what is seasonal and local. My friend and mentor, Debra Prinzing, summed it up perfectly in her recent “Slow Flower Manifesto”.

r+h: Can you tell us about your community of local growers/farmers ?

CH: Foxglove began with two farmers, both of whom had been growing flowers for a number of years. Eventually, I talked a few new farmers into coming on board, but for the last 4 years, we were still only at about 6 flower farmers in the Twin Cities area. In the past year or so, the local scene has gone bonkers. My new venture this summer-an all-local wholesale flower market-has 19 participating farmers!

r+h: What is your design process?

CH: While my personality is very organized and detail-oriented, my design process has always been very organic, hands-on, and intuitive. I don’t like to do a lot of planning, which may drive a few of my farmers crazy. I’m notoriously bad about ordering ahead of time, and much prefer to see what’s fresh and lovely that day, using that as immediate inspiration.

r+h: Do you have a favorite flower?

CH: Well, one might think it’s the Foxglove…..but, it really depends on the season. Or the year. Or my mood.

r+h: Why chose to partner with the russell+hazel flagship store?

CH: I have been a fan of Russell hazel for many, many years, and the flagship store makes me swoon. The core products from r + h appeal to the organizational nut in me, but the concept and product selection at the flagship store is so modern and right-on.  Plus, the staff is so darn nice:)

r+h: How do you hope to impact change with Foxglove Market & Studio?

CH: First and foremost, by providing a sustainable, local alternative to conventional cut flowers. Additionally, building a strong and diverse creative community-through business collaborations, consumer outreach, and farmer support-is essential to creating change. I certainly can’t do this alone, and when people are armed with information and options, it is amazing what can happen.

“Sparkle On” Book Launch @ r+h Flagship Store

May 17, 2017

Speaker, blogger and writer Kim Kane is releasing her very first book and we couldn’t be more excited to host her at our flagship store for a fun-filled evening of story-telling, shopping and of course cocktails.  We talked to Kim about Sparkle On and learned more about her writing process and inspiration.

russell+hazel: What inspired you to write Sparkle On?

Kim Kane: What inspired me originally was turning 50. I decided to write a daily blog of everything that I learned throughout that year before my 50th birthday. I ended up with over 200 followers and began to hear from other women about the struggles, joys and questions they too were having about aging. At the end of the year I blogged, I realized a theme was emerging. It was all about gratitude. I realized that even when things were sad, such as when I experienced the loss of my father that year, if I looked through the lens of gratitude, and if I saw even a small glimmer of hope, it made all the difference in how I felt. I also really wanted to know that I was not alone in this aging experience. That desire morphed into me interviewing over 200 women age 50 and above. Their words, their experiences helped not only me feel connected, but based on what I heard from the women I spoke with, they also felt more connected after talking about aging. In a society that values youth, I really want to change that perception. The value is placed on looks, not abilities. Any commercial will tell you they can ‘defy’ aging with their product…the message being pretty clear: No one wants to see you age. Yet there is such beauty in woman as they age. Women become more confident, less worried about what they have to do and more focused on what they want to do. I know women over age 50 currently make up the majority of the population…and while that means many of us are looking where we parked our cars on any given day, I want women to know they are not alone. I want women to know it’s ok to age and it takes nothing away…in fact, there may be benefits to gain.

r+h: Is this your first book?

KK: Yesand it so exciting

r+h: Can you tell us a bit about your writing journey?

KK: Once I realized that the book I wanted to write was not just about what I was experiencing as I aged, I decided to interview other women. I started out by asking friends via email certain questions. Then I asked women to come to small gatherings so I could interview more women at once. I thought I would hold or attend only a few of these gatherings, but it turned out women loved talking about this subject of aging so much so that I began to be asked to come to  women’s homes of people I did not know either at all or very little. It was wonderful! I started to call the gatherings: Celebrate Women! I ended up interviewing over 200 women. My first surprise was how candid women were in answering the questions. Whether it was about their own worries for aging, intimacy, the joys of being a grandparent, or the fact that they each knew they had already lived more than they will, everyone had something to offer. I loved that! Hearing their answers and watching other women nod, laugh or at times even cry with the woman who was sharing was very powerful.  It created really great and comfortable spaces for women to share personal stories. I felt blessed by them all. The book has chapters that allow for several stories to be told throughout each chapter pertaining to the subject matter. For example one of the chapters, ‘Lions and Tigers and Hair, Oh My!’ is all about body changes. I offer a few personal stories and then weave other women’s words to help show other’s perspectives. I give the women’s first name and age for each quote or story. At the end of the book I tried to capture short pieces of lessons learned and to be passed on to others in a section I call: Sparkles of Wisdom.

r+h: How long did the process take?

KK: In total 5 years. I wrote most consistently the last two yearseven though that seems like a long time, it went by so fast. I really enjoy writing.

r+h: What are your “must have” writing accessories?

KK:  Love this question! I always need my reading glasses, a notebook, pencil with a good eraser and my laptop. I would also add something that really made a difference for me was where I wrote. I typically would sit in a library after my day job, drink coffee and write for up to 3 hours solid. The atmosphere was so conducive for me to write and stay with my thoughts. Another great accessory was my porch. Writing in a room that had windows and sounds of nature coming in offered for some of my best writing (at least I thought so!)

r+h: Why partner with the r+h flagship store for your book launch?

KK: For starters I love russell+hazel! There is not a better place that caters to writing, organization and style! To be honest, I am over the moon to be partnering with r+h. The atmosphere is exactly what I hope my book offers…comfortable space, creativity and everything you need to feel special when doing every day things like writing, reading and simply being in your home with wonderful scents and art surrounding you. I have been a customer of r+h for years. Things I have purchased through r+h always made me feel special. So…what better place to launch my book that hopes to create that special feeling for others, than russell+hazel?!

r+h: Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself?

KK: I tend to snort when I laughit used to bug me, but now it just makes me laugh harder and snort louder!

r+h: What’s your favorite book?

KK: EEKI don’t know if I have an absolute favorite. However, I loved reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is filled with great empowering stories and ideas. I have it sitting on my desk to remind me of the ‘big magic’ all around me.

r+h: What reaction do you hope readers will have after reading Sparkle On?

KK: Since the majority of my audience is women, I am hoping they will enjoy reading the experiences other woman have shared, and in turn, see themselves. I hope the women who read this book laugh, smile and give a nod of understanding to what others have shared about the aging experiencing. Mostly, I want women to be inspired to do those things that make them Sparkle…no matter their age! It really is never too late.

Join us on Sunday, May 21st from 5 – 7:30 PM at our flagship store  for the Sparkle On book launch.  Guests will enjoy a reading from Kim, light appetizers and cocktails and the opportunity to get their book signed by Kim.

We hope to see you there!

Demystifying Meditation With Vanessa Feils

April 24, 2017

Spring brings a fresh energy, motivating all sorts of organizational clean up and de-cluttering of our home and workspaces. In honor of that spirit of spring cleansing, we will be hosting an energetic evening combining russell+hazel style organization with spiritual and personal growth. On Thursday, April 27th from 6:30 – 8:00 pm, the russell+hazel flagship store will be hosting Vanessa Feils for a short lecture and guided meditation that will demystify the limiting beliefs that keep you from manifesting your desires. Her teaching style will guide you to your own inner wisdom, revealing the “how to steps” that are perfect for you. What if you were told that you already have everything you need right inside of you? This is what Life Stylist, Vanessa Feils, will help you to understand.

Like many people in a creative field, Vanessa is an experiential learner. It’s through her experiences that she gains insight and knowledge, as well as her passion to learn, teach and share. After being on her own 10 year self study in February 2013, she was invited to join International Healer in an Operational Role. That experience sparked her desire to begin laying the foundation of her own practice. Soon after, Vanessa Feils Inc. was founded, immediately attracting people in need of direction and assistance, realizing successful and fulfilling results.

Vanessa took a few minutes to sit down with us to get us better acquainted with her and the practice of meditation.

russell+hazel: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Vanessa: The weirder the better. I am a free spirited soul that loves new experiences. People and their journeys fascinate me. I am a deep connector, that is always interested in discovering why are paths are crossing.

r+h: For those who are not familiar with the practice of meditating, can you please give a brief description?

V: Meditation is the practice of connecting deeply to yourself. The more you practice consciously connecting, the deeper you go to discover all your magical powers. This is a relationship everyone gets to have. The thought of learning can feel overwhelming – I often assist people by leading them in a guided meditation. My guided meditation experience assists the individual or group in feeling a deep connection, so when you are meditating on your own you have a point of reference to connect to. Like learning how to ride a bike, once you sense that balance, you are off and cruising.

r+h: What got you started/interested in meditation?

V: I was guided to it. I desired for a long time to have a meditation practice. The more that I became at peace with myself and focused on strengthening that relationship, meditation became available. I found myself guided to sit and that practice led to seeing color, symbols and feeling light and out of body – yes, like floating. All of my teaching has been learned through experience and intuition.

r+h: Can you tell us about some of the benefits of meditation?

V: This style of meditation is life changing. It becomes a lifestyle that puts you in the driver’s seat of your own life, just through being aware. Some of the benefits one experiences is calmness – allowing you to feel a sense of peace and joy throughout your entire body, reassuring you that you are perfect, whole and complete and you stand today.

r+h: How can people incorporate meditation into their daily life?

V: Start to be aware of the mindfulness moments that you already have in your life – the smallest things. So if you frequent time in nature, walking/running, playing with animals or children, reading, a yoga practice, working out, baths/soaks, really connected conversation. You do not need to be overlooking a beautiful landscape or in a meditation center to practice mindfulness. Just by being aware of what you are already doing that is mindful, assists in the shift. Your thoughts create your reality – so by focusing on what you are not doing will only bring more of what you don’t want. Meditation is simply having a relationship with yourself.

r+h: Any advice for any first timers who want to try it out?

V: Yes, start with just 2 minutes. Set the timer on your phone, put on some zen music, sit or lie down resting your palms up and connect to your breath. If you need assistance with your mind chatter, focus on using ‘love’ as a mantra – as you inhale, consciously breath in love and as you exhale, send ‘love’ out to the world or a specific person/community.

r+h: Why did you choose to collaborate with r+h?

V: It felt so right! I office in the neighborhood and had sent out an intention to the ‘Universe” a couple months prior that I wanted to connect and collaborate with the North Loop community. I often speak about divine guidance, when we enter into the natural flow of our life and begin to trust, we no longer need to plan ahead into the future. We are living and everything around us is just showing up at this beautiful speed, guiding and connecting us with one another. After being in the store and meeting Gail and Rachel, the idea clicked – and the rest just flowed. I feel so grateful.

r+h: What is one question you’ve never been asked that you wished you had?

V: “Baby … what’s your love language?” (insert heart eye emoji)

Interview With MEND Jewelry Designer Jordyn DiOrio

April 21, 2017

MEND  is a line of jewelry handmade in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  The collection celebrates flourishing within the challenges faced in life by turning the act of repairmen into healing. Through the marriage of spirituality and natural, precious gemstones, the brand brings sentiment around one’s neck.  This gorgeously crafted collection fusing contemporary design with healing elements is the latest addition to the roster of MN Made products at our flagship store and will be debuting on Saturday, April 21st.  We talked to founder and designer Jordyn DiOrio about MEND and also got to know a thing or two about this incredibly talented woman.

russell+hazel: How did MEND Jewelry start?

Jordyn DiOrio: MEND started as a creative brainstorm via text message with my sister back in December as a I laid deathly sick on New Years Eve in Duluth.  One month later, created, branded, built and launched.  I don’t know how I did it, but I knew I wanted to see what direction the brand and designs would g

r+h: For those who are not familiar with Mend Jewelry can you describe your aesthetic?

JO: MEND’s aesthetic aims to be sophisticated balanced with a little bit of edge. This is achieved through the delicate gold chains paired with the sharpness of the gemstones and hand pendant.

r+h: Where did you learn how to design and produce your jewelry?

JO: I am self taught.  I started tinkering with hand-me- down tools about 3-4 years ago during college.

r+h: What’s your favorite piece and why?

JOI am an advocate for layering pieces and I currently love wearing the rosary style in quartz paired with a short rose quartz. The rosary design is simple, yet different than a standard necklace. The stones also embody balance and love, which I try to achieve daily.

r+h: Can you tell us a random fact about yourself?

JO: I am one of seven siblings, all from in Chicago, and also very Italian.

r+h: Why partner with the russell+hazel flagship store?

JO: I’ve always been a fan of russell+hazel , as I am agenda & paper product fanatic.  I love that their storefront acts like a studio to showcase high-quality products and designs. MEND is thrilled to be a part of russell+hazel’s flagship store as it matches well with the brand’s goal of high-quality and classic design.

r+h: What inspires you?

JO: Especially in the realm of jewelry design, I have found inspiration from the women I’ve grown up around.  I’ve had grandmothers who decorated themselves with rings, & necklaces, to my baby nieces who wear layers of pearls as dress-up for fun. I love the concept of wearing items with significance;  they can be a reminder of where we are at in our lives, represent those who we want to embody or just acknowledge how far we’ve come.

PLEASE JOIN US SATURDAY, APRIL 21ST FROM 10-4 FOR THE DEBUT OF MEND JEWELRY AT OUR FLAGSHIP STORE.

r+h Must Haves: Leather Phone Case + Apps

April 7, 2017

It’s a fact of modern life: we’re on our phones ALL the time. They’ve become seamlessly integrated into our daily habits, something we pick up so often we don’t even notice.

We included a leather phone case in the 2017 collection because we felt the need for a classic, high quality and high style accessory to protect and tote our phones. Something so ever-present in our lives should look great. It’s also seriously functional. The snap-close cover holds cards and cash so you can grab-and-go with all your essentials in one sleek piece.

In the spirit of accepting our utter dependence on these devices, we asked around the r+h offices, “What’s on your phone? What are you using and loving lately?” Below – the apps we can’t get enough of.

“Spotify running! You start running and Spotify plays music that matches your tempo. They have tons of different themes to choose from. They even have one called “The Chase” that mixes action movie music so you feel like you’re actually in one.”

“I use Feedly to catch up on the latest news and posts. I am able to group by topic and add different sources based on my interests, then go through them as I have time.”

“I love Snapseed for editing photos. I can take an image from dark and shadowy to bright and airy without photoshop.”

“Podcasts. I drive an average of 75 miles a day and had been purchasing audiobooks for the ride. Now, with a few clicks, I can listen and learn, in my car!! Very nice and wide variety to listen to.”

“Waze – I happen to be a bit of a speed demon, and I love using this app because it is about 85% accurate to let you know if there is a cop sitting up the road. If there is road construction, it will change your route so you can avoid it and you can add your favorite addresses so you can just tell it to go to “Courtney & Derek’s House”.

“The app I use a lot on my phone is the 8MM Vintage Camera. I love it because as an amateur filmmaker, it allows me to capture the beauty and mood of vintage movies in real time.”

“The Crate & Barrel wedding registry for obvious reasons :)”

“The Google Calendar app. I finally found a calendar that is easy to use and looks great! I can’t imagine how I kept track of anything before I got it.”

“Uber Eats! We finally got Uber Eats in our area and they deliver donuts from one of our favorite spots! It’s slowly becoming a Sunday morning tradition. The best part is we can stay in our PJs.”

“I love listening to audiobooks on Audible. I just listened to Rosamund Pike narrate Pride and Prejudice.”

“Spotify Discover Weekly. Every week, they create a new playlist for you based on your likes and what’s new. It never disappoints.”

“The podcast Ana Faris Is Unqualified. She has a different celebrity co-host for each episode- it’s light hearted and so funny!”

“The Venmo app! If you don’t have it- you need it! It’s the easiest way to electronically transfer money to or request payment from your friends. There’s no service charge and you’ll never have to awkwardly figure out how to split a restaurant check again.”

Now it’s your turn. We want to know what apps you’re loving – let us know on social @russellandhazel. And don’t forget to check out the gorgeous new arrivals in our leather collection!
